Backstage with models, photographer and co.... Hysterical !

Since 1992 when we (at ItemLiz-ECK) have started our collaboration, we’ve been doing backstage shooting. ItemLiz-ECK was not called that way back in 1992. It was just ItemLiz. We added ECK for Evana-Carol-Killian (the historic models).

ItemLiz-ECK is an amazing adventure. Due to circumstances, we worked in dozens of places from nature to museums, from hotel room to beaches. We shot in a Natural Museum, some beaches, a Hotel room of an architectural building, in parks, in garbage dump, an Opera hall, a National Park, an Island and even a castle.

We had a hundred of clothing from Princess to tramp, via sportive, punk, nerd, dancing queen or hysterical girl.

Carol and I worked for a couple of year altogether. It was just a duet with a team behind the scene. Carol is a very malleable person. She could do anything I imagined for her. She is the soft version in my wild and rebel vision. She dreams herself into princess and gowns whilst I imagined punk stories. She was a bit clumsy sometimes but she did it great.

Then, Evana joined the crew, followed two years later by Killian. Both brought the perfect combination to ItemLiz. They were similar, kind of sibling, but total opposite in attitudes. One was wild and sexy, the other was mature and sensual. It was the perfect mix with Carol and her artless attitude.

In 2009, we welcomed those three wonderful girls. Alexandrine, Marine & Sarah are three amazing girls, so talented and different. They started with a pretty much challenging theme : 20’s. They succeeded and were potentially the best I’ve had for years in my lens!

So, basically, backstage photos are quite weird to look at ! There is no directive line for those photos. Everyone is allowed to shoot anyone, in any situation and above all, to capture the worst or the funniest ones. Since 1992, we shot many backstage photos and some are quite important for us all.

We’ve seen some models in the worst situations, the funniest positions and the most embarrassing attitudes, but it is always with love, friendship and a lot of respect.

After years between adults, our three gorgeous, stunning and talented young women offer us hilarious moments and the privilege of youth.

I am a bit of despotic while a fashion shooting. I tolerated no lapses in a set. All is scheduled, listed and organized. You have to. Especially when you have four models, two assistants, a hairdresser, a makeup artist who want to eat candies, dancing in rhythm, drinking champagne (especially the photographer !) answer back any text message or even relax on the couch ; All that in a very strict schedule, sometimes in a studio. Believe me, you have to be despotic !

Anyhow, the results are always the most amusing.

Sarah : She's a lady !

When Carol & I decided to enroll a couple of girls for our fashion shooting, my sibling, Alex, (already casted for) asked her closest friends and introduced us to Sarah.

Sarah was immediately a bright kid for us. She was funny, smart, so fashionable, and with this strong will to succeed. She was also the tallest of them with a model attitude. She knows what she wants. Basically, no ! She does know what she does not want ! She expresses it clearly and it finally occurs that she was great in any session.

She learns quickly and knows how to follow “orders” whilst shooting because she is clever enough to realize that I am right about an attitude, a position or lighting.

For her first shooting, she had to be a 20’s girl. And she did it satisfactorily (like the 2 others newcomers, Alex & Marine).

The fact that you must know about Sarah is that she is a very talented girl with many skills. She can sew a gown, sketches, dances, models, dresses up like in Marie-Antoinette and looks terrific and also, she gets a brain ! She is top of her class and may be a very great leader in the domain she would work for.

I really like talking with Sarah because she shares a lot with me : fashion, model, drawing, travelling, artistic areas, etc. She’s like a “little” me… but with better looking, more willing to achieve her goals, lots of opportunities and her youth…

We share another place in common… a certain area in Southern West of France, within a 10 km of distance.

Do remember her name … She will be popular very soon !

Marine : You're beautiful !

How can I describe Marine ?

A small perfection ?
Amazingly and surprisingly gorgeous ? She is ABFAB !

This petite young woman is just a jewel. The first time I saw her, she was a bit shy, a bit nervous (it was on the « 20’s » shooting) and she was not as self-confident as she is now. I had to say that when Carol & I saw her, we both looked at each other and knew instantly that she would be a wonderful model.

She wasn’t sure of her beauty and was not able to control her nervousness but she was happy to be with Alex & Sarah and she acted like a girl meeting.

But she was just at the right place, the right moment, the right smile, the right pose, the right attitude. Any of their photos was right. No need to ask her to do that, or this. I just had to say that she was acting a 20’s girl, waiting for his beau and enjoying her time with her friends before leaving for a Charleston party. She captured the theme and did it by instinct. And that is major class to me.

This attitude of class made her do the greatest photo I’ve taken in years. She was pretending to be “Liz Taylor”. You know, one of the most gorgeous women in the world to me. And she accomplished being Liz.

Then, Marine is lovely, funny, making faces, warm and caring. She is always happy and never complains (well, somehow, in her eyes, you can see that she is not happy but doesn’t protest loudly).  To sum up it all, she’s a kind of angel with a devil inside.

After a couple of shooting, we decided to make another session much more difficult.... Picking a 50's sex symbol as an inspiration and play it !

So, Alex plays Sophia Loren, Carol Audrey Hepburn, Marine Elizabeth Taylor & Sarah Grace Kelly...
They did a great job and the whole team were soooooo HAPPY of their performance !

Let's be inspired by those amazing girls ! I am sooo proud of "my girls".

Friendship in Fashion Chapter : Me, Myself & I

Okay, when it comes to show my face, I am not that keen on ... but I have to admit that I pretty like doing selfportrait of myself and ending a shooting with my models... at one condition : No photo published allowed.. But you know... Talking about friendship without putting myself in the middle of this Chapter would have a bit dump indeed..

So, here are a few pictures of myself... through the years... And picking up those photos, I realized that I am getting older !! It seems that I am still 20, but my ID says 41... Isn't it odd ?

Well, Next post in a couple of days, with some photos from Paris... :)
